This is a fascinating true story of determination, mortal danger, and success. After ten years of planning and preparations, the author, then twenty-seven years old along with his twenty-four year-old wife, and their four and two year old children defected in the middle of a cold rainy night from behind the Iron Curtain of Communist Czechoslovakia to Austria, while being chased by guards with automatic weapons. Their own government would rather see them dead than to be free.

They left everything and everybody they loved behind and risked everything, including their own lives for a chance to live a life of freedom in the United States of America. They chose not to tell any family members about their plans in order to protect them from the wrath of their own government, which they knew would follow if their escape was successful.

This story comes from the dreams of a teenage boy longing for freedom from an oppressive government in a small foreign country to living a free life in America and the opportunity to call the American flag his flag, and the Star Spangled Banner his anthem. This story combines all the important components such as determination, hope, life threatening dangers, children, the struggle for freedom, new beginnings, hard work, and success.

Outstanding! Journey For Freedom-Defection From Communism is a detailed account of how one young man risked everything for the chance for freedom. Not only did he leave everything he knew and loved and held dear to his heart, he risked the possibility of never seeing his children or wife again if they were caught. Peter Vodenka had every reason to stay in Czechoslovakia-family he dearly loved, a beloved horse he had dreamt of having one day and would never see again, and the security of all he had ever known…..to leave it all for the chance for something greater than anything he had ever known-- freedom. Few of us can appreciate the freedom we live with every day until we read what people experience in other countries--day in and day out propaganda and lies in an existence of very little. Ordinary groceries we so take for granted are such a luxury to these people, let alone the homes and cars we own. One wonders why people in our country promote socialism so vehemently when this story of people living it proves what a joke it is. They need to live the lives of these people and understand how much they need to enlighten themselves to what it really is. Today Peter Vodenka speaks to groups about the reasons we shouldn't be accepting Socialism in this country and he is so qualified to speak about it in every aspect. He came to a country that gave him the freedom he was seeking for he and his family and now he gives beck to this country by trying to protect that freedom, warning people of the dangers of a system he has lived and suffered from. He is living proof of the failure of the so called equality of Socialism by having seen
first hand the manipulation and intimidation of it's principles. For those avowed Socialists in America, read this book and then get on your soapbox and expound your idiocy. Peter Vodenka is the kind of immigrant this country was founded on…..searching for a place to live his dreams with freedom from oppression. Now he gives back to this country and makes our country a better place by the citizen he is. I hope he will always speak in front of groups……he should be on television, broadcasting his message. This country needs his message as much as he needed the freedom it gave him.

Journey For FreedomDefection From Communist Czechoslovakia Peter Vodenka Deborah Stewart Patty VodenkaReed 9781616588168 Books Reviews

I have some Bohemian ancestors so was interested in the story initially because of that.
I had read a story about the Hungarian Revolution from the 1950's that stayed with me and I was interested in reviewing this book from the 1980's escape from Communism.
I saw this author in person and had to have his book.
I have Czech/Bohemian ancestry and a good friend from Poland so it was very interesting to learn of the experiences of somebody who lived and defected from that area and what life was like under Communist rule.
A story of courage, as this family dares to leave their homeland with the goal of reaching the United States.
How easy it is for us, who have always lived in America, to not realize how attractive our society is to the rest of the world.
And how people will risk everything to reach the country they so admire for its freedom.
Journey for Freedom tells in gripping detail how lives are trapped and the soul is perpetually restrained under the shackles of communist totalitarianism. Freedom is dear if people are willing to risk death, prison, or losing their children to achieve it. Journey for Freedom also tells another story of immigrants who came to the United States in the 1980s with no money and unable to speak English but through hard work and determination became successful and achieved the American dream.
Great book
Can't wait to read the book. It came very fast and well packaged. I am having Peter and his wife sign the book for me.
